The Lindsey Read School of Dance was established in 1994 by Lindsey Shelley.

Classes in Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz and Musical Theatre are available and pupils gain an understanding of basic techniques essential for building a foundation from which they can develop their skills either as a hobby, or with a view to pursuing a career within the Performing Arts industry.

Pupils are regularly entered for I.S.T.D. examinations in all subjects and enjoy performing in our school productions which are held every 3 years at The Point Theatre in Eastleigh.

Many pupils have gained places at some of the leading Performing Arts Colleges in the country and are now working professionally.

These colleges include: Bird College, Laine Theatre Arts, Millenium Performing Arts, Performers College, Tiffany Theatre College, Tring Park performing Arts, Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, Urdang Academy, Legat School of Dance, London Studio Centre, Cambridge Performing Arts and Laban Centre of Music and Dance.

Pupils have also been accepted onto both the Central School of Ballet and the Royal Ballet School Associate courses where they take Saturday classes designed to augment their regular weekly training.

Talented pupils are also considered for professional shows, namely the annual pantomime held at the Southampton Mayflower Theatre. Children must attend regular Ballet and Modern classes to be considered for these productions and must fit the height criteria.

Other professional shows which our pupils have performed in are: Coppelia, Giselle, Swan Lake & Cinderella (English National Ballet Company), Never Forget Tour, Evita, Oliver & The King & I (Mayflower Theatre), Treasure Island & The Borrowers (Nuffield Theatre) and numerous productions by The English Youth Ballet across the country.

Lindsey began dancing at the age of 4 years old in the Waterside area. She then went on to train at The Julia Chittenden School of dance in Southampton until she was 16, and then gained a place at the prestigious college Laine Theatre Arts in Epsom, Surrey where she completed her professional training. During her time there, she performed in several professional shows including work for the BBC, and also gained her I.S.T.D. teaching qualifications in both Modern and Ballet with Distinction.
After spending some time teaching freelance in the Southampton area, including The Julia Chittenden School of dance, Lindsey opened the Lindsey Read School of dance in 1994. Starting with just 20 pupils, she went on to expand the school to what it is today. Lindsey furthered her qualifications and gained her Associate Diploma in Ballet and then in more recent years, she gained her DDE in Lifespan & Development and Health & Safety.
During her time teaching at Julia Chittendens, she started to become involved in training the children for the annual pantomimes at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton. Once Julia Chittenden retired, Lindsey then secured a contract with Michael Rose Productions and supplied the children from her own dance school for the annual Christmas shows. During this time, she was also asked to supply children for several English National Ballet Company’s productions and the fabulous Never Forget Tour all at the Mayflower Theatre. In 2012, Qdos Entertainment were commissioned once more to stage the Christmas pantomimes and held a competition in conjunction with Wave 105 FM for local dance schools to supply the children, Lindsey’s school were delighted to have won this competition and are still performing in the Christmas Pantomimes today. Children can also be seen performing in many other professional productions across the country after successful auditions.
Many of the pupils who Lindsey has trained over the years have gone on to train professionally at some of the top vocational colleges in the country and are now working professionally in the industry.
Lindsey continues to teach with more passion than ever and feels she has found her true vocation in passing on her knowledge and experience to our younger performers of tomorrow.
